Fire extinguishing apparatus having a slidable mass for a penetrator nozzle

    Get PDF
A fire extinguishing apparatus for delivering an extinguishing agent through a tarrier surrounding a structure into its interior includes an elongated tubular nozzle body which has a pointed penetrating head carried on one end of the tubular body. A source of extinguishing agent coupled to the opposite end of the tubular body is fed through and passes through passages adjacent the head for delivering the extinguishing agent to the interior of the structure. A slidable mass is carried on the tubular body on a remote end of the tubular body from the penetrating head. By manipulating the slidable mass and bringing such in contact with an abutment the force imparted to the tubular body causes the head to penetrate the structure

Fake View Analytics in Online Video Services

Online video-on-demand(VoD) services invariably maintain a view count for each video they serve, and it has become an important currency for various stakeholders, from viewers, to content owners, advertizers, and the online service providers themselves. There is often significant financial incentive to use a robot (or a botnet) to artificially create fake views. How can we detect the fake views? Can we detect them (and stop them) using online algorithms as they occur? What is the extent of fake views with current VoD service providers? These are the questions we study in the paper. We develop some algorithms and show that they are quite effective for this problem.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figure

Towards Laser Driven Hadron Cancer Radiotherapy: A Review of Progress

    Get PDF
It has been known for about sixty years that proton and heavy ion therapy is a very powerful radiation procedure for treating tumours. It has an innate ability to irradiate tumours with greater doses and spatial selectivity compared with electron and photon therapy and hence is a tissue sparing procedure. For more than twenty years powerful lasers have generated high energy beams of protons and heavy ions and hence it has been frequently speculated that lasers could be used as an alternative to RF accelerators to produce the particle beams necessary for cancer therapy. The present paper reviews the progress made towards laser driven hadron cancer therapy and what has still to be accomplished to realise its inherent enormous potential.Comment: 40 pages, 24 figure

    Braj B. Kachru’s scholarly publications: A bibliography

Although best known for his work on world Englishes, Braj Kachru was a truly original thinker, whose academic writings included influential publications on English linguistics, Indian languages, but much else besides, including applied linguistics, bilingualism and multilingualism, code‐mixing and switching, cross‐cultural communication, language policy, linguistic variation, literary creativity, sociolinguistics, and the politics of language. Braj B. Kachru was a renaissance scholar of immense stature, whose work brought together Indian and English linguistics with the cultural perspectives of both Asia and the West, and inspired scholars worldwide to adopt fresh perspectives on so many language issues.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/150583/1/weng12411_am.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/150583/2/weng12411.pd

Lepton flavor violation at linear collider experiments in supersymmetric grand unified theories

    Get PDF
Lepton flavor violation at linear collider experiments is discussed. We show that detectable lepton flavor violation could occur through scalar lepton pair production and decay in the supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory in spite of the stringent present experimental constraints by rare process searches. Possible cross sections about 40fb for an e+e- collider and 280fb for an e-e- collider are illustrated.Comment: 12 pages, including 3 figures, REVTeX, eps

Closing in on the picture : analyzing interactions in video recordings

    Get PDF
This paper provides a detailed account of the processing and analysing of data, obtained through video recording during reflective practitioner research. It sets out five stages in the analysis of video recordings of classroom interactions during a series of educational drama lessons: from decisions relating to the selection of data for close analysis, to the seeking of themes, and finally to the presentation of conclusions. The researcher adapted and synthesised several processes derived from discourse analysis (Wells, 2001; Spiers, 2004; Gee, 2005) to produce a range of instruments for use in transcription and analysis of verbal and non-verbal discourse. These include: a simple transcription key; classifications for verbal and non-verbal discourse; and a template for a transcription and analysis matrix

From Ambridge to the world? Class returns to rural population geographies

    Get PDF
Via The Archers BBC radio show, this paper responds to Smith and Phillips call for investigating rural population change within the Global North from a class-foregrounded gentrification perspective and for undertaking it in an internationally comparative manner. Neither is sufficiently developed within scholarship to date. Although endorsing their call, this paper adds three contextual framings: describing and explaining the late blossoming of explicit ‘rural gentrification’ research; stressing the challenges presented to geographical transferability of concepts and terminology; and noting the not exclusive role class needs to play within critical discourse on contemporary rural populations

    Reference Distorted Prices

I show that when consumers (mis)perceive prices relative to reference prices, budgets turn out to be soft, prices tend to be lower and the average quality of goods sold decreases. These observations provide explanations for decentralized purchase decisions, for people being happy with a purchase even when they have paid their evaluation, and for why trade might affect high quality local firms 'unfairly'

Radio-Luminous Southern Seyfert Galaxies. I. Radio Images and Selected Optical/Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

This is the first of two papers in which a study is made of a sample of 12 southern radio-luminous Seyfert galaxies. Our aim is to investigate possible correlations between radio morphology and nuclear/circumnuclear emission-line properties. In this paper we present radio images at 13, 6, and 3 cm taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), global far-infrared (FIR) properties for the whole sample, and optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of an interesting subset. We find a mixture of radio morphologies, including linear, diffuse and compact sources. When the FIR colors of the galaxies are considered there is an indication that the compact radio sources have warmer FIR colors than the diffuse sources, whereas the linear sources span a wide range of FIR colors. There is a wide variation in radio spectral-indices, suggesting that free-free absorption is significant in some systems, particularly IRAS 11249-2859, NGC 4507, and NGC 7213. Detailed emission-line studies are presented of 4 galaxies IC 3639, NGC 5135, NGC 3393 & IRAS 11249-2859. In IC 3639 we present evidence of vigorous, compact star formation enclosed by very extended [OI]6300 emission, suggestive of the boundary between a diffuse outflow and the surrounding ISM. In another galaxy, IC 5063, we see evidence for the possible interaction of a highly collimated outflow and the surrounding rotating inner disk. Of the 5 galaxies which show compact radio emission, 4 have radio/FIR flux ratios consistent with an energetically dominant AGN, whereas IC 4995 exhibits evidence for a very compact starburst.Comment: 42 pages, including 7 tables, latex, 19 jpeg figures, Accepted to ApJ.
